Charging and battery care

Draft

How to charge the Onyx RCR and CTY2 batteries step by step, how long it takes, and how to store the pack.

Charging steps (RCR V2.0)

  1. Unlock the wood cover and slide it back toward the seat. Lift the front over the fork head tube nut, slide it forward, and lift the rear off. Never force or pry it; it is plywood, not metal.
  2. Unlatch the battery strap, then lift the battery out front first, easing the cables clear.
  3. Set the battery switch to OFF. Plug the charger into the wall, then into the battery. The charger light turns red while charging and green when done.
  4. Switch the battery OFF again before reinstalling. Seat the back of the battery on the tray first, then lower the front, and plug in the red discharge cables. A spark on connection is normal a few times but wears the connector.
  5. Buckle the strap snug and switch the battery ON.

Charging time with the standard 5 A charger: about 2.5 hours to 80%, 4.5 hours to 100%. The charger output is 84 V, and the charge connector is a 3-pin XLR.

Care

  • Do not leave the battery on the charger after it finishes.
  • Use only the supplied charger. Aftermarket fast chargers are at your own risk.
  • Store at about 50% charge at room temperature, never empty, and top it up every 3 months.
  • Charge before riding after the bike has sat for a few days.
  • Avoid full discharges and extreme temperatures. Never use a dropped or damaged battery.
  • Unplug the battery before working on the bike.

CTY2 charging

  1. Open the seal cover on the charging port at the bottom right of the battery carriage. The battery can stay in the bike.
  2. Align the PowerCon plug. It only fits one way. Turn the connector counterclockwise until the yellow tab clicks into place.
  3. The standard 5 A charger turns green at about 97% (69.2 V). The last 3% to 100% (71.4 V) is trickle charging and takes about 95 more minutes. Charging to 97% before a ride is fine, and 100% is not needed every time.
  • The BMS only balances cells while the charger is plugged in, even when the pack is full.
  • Safe temperatures: operating -20 to 50 C, charging 0 to 45 C.
  • Below 45 F, let the pack rest an hour after riding before charging. Do not store it above 120 F, and avoid storing it outdoors below 32 F.
  • For storage, charge to 50% (61.2 V). The manual says to switch off the discharge function in the app.
