Ride modes and the display
DraftWhat the Onyx RCR's Eco, Normal, and Sport modes do, what the LCD shows, and why to watch battery voltage.
The left switch selects three modes:
- ECO: up to about 20 mph, 750 W governed, roughly 75 miles of range.
- NRM (Normal): up to about 38 mph, roughly 40 miles.
- SPT (Sport): up to 60 mph maximum, 3,000 W, roughly 20 miles.
The LCD shows speed, charge level, odometer, trip, battery voltage, the mode, and headlight and turn indicators.
Stay above 60 volts
Voltage drops under throttle, which is normal. The manual calls it the best way to judge remaining energy, since the charge meter lies. If voltage sags below 60 V under throttle, the BMS cuts power, so ride home before it gets there.
Power-up sequence
- Put the bike on its kickstand.
- Remove the cover, switch the battery on, and replace the cover.
- Press the key fob to power the bike.
- Press the kill switch on the throttle.
CTY2 modes
- ECO: about 15 mph, 500 W governed.
- NRM: about 20 mph, 750 W.
- SPT: about 40 mph max, 1,500 W.
Change modes while stopped, or slow the bike below the new mode’s speed threshold first. The manual says Normal and Sport are for off-road use only.
CTY2 battery sag and cutoff
- At full throttle, sag is typically 4 to 5 V on warm days and up to 7 V on cold days. Eco limits it.
- Below 51 V under load, the bike cuts off to protect the cells. It resets within 10 seconds, and you unlock it with the key fob. Pulling the rear brake to start regen right away can prevent a full cutoff.
- Keep charge above 20%, which is 57 V on the dash voltmeter.
